PGS selects Thyssenkrupp Nucera as electrolyzer partner for green HBI project

Australia’s Progressive Green Solutions (PGS) has chosen Thyssenkrupp Nucera as its preferred supplier of electrolyzers with a total capacity of 1.4 GW for its flagship Mid-West Green Iron project near Geraldton, Western Australia.

The project targets annual output of 7 mln tons of green iron pellets, with half converted into 2.5 mln tons of hot briquetted iron (HBI) for export. Using local magnetite ore, renewable energy, and green hydrogen, the plant is expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to 90pct compared to conventional steelmaking.

First exports are anticipated in 2029, with plans to scale production to 30 mln tons of green pellets and 10 mln tons of HBI annually. The project will leverage existing infrastructure with an integrated mine-to-port supply chain.

PGS will deploy Thyssenkrupp Nucera’s modular 20 MW Scalum alkaline electrolysis units to generate green hydrogen. The partners will now work toward an EPF (engineering, procurement, fabrication) contract, subject to final investment approval.
