Salzgitter Group and RWE Supply & Trading have secured a long-term green electricity supply agreement for up to 64 gigawatt-hours annually. This seven-year contract will commence in 2027.
The green electricity will be sourced from the Boitzenburger Land solar park in Brandenburg, a 180-megawatt facility spanning approximately 170 hectares, making it one of Germany’s largest photovoltaic systems. Operational since autumn 2023, the park is owned by Solarenergie Boitzenburger Land GmbH, GP JOULE Group, and Mainova AG, with Mainova responsible for marketing the electricity.
RWE brings over 20 years of experience in renewable energy development and operation, managing onshore wind farms and solar plants in Germany with a combined capacity of around 700 megawatts.
As part of its SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) transformation program, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, the largest entity within the Salzgitter Group, will transition its steel production to electricity and hydrogen-based processes starting in 2026. The goal is to achieve near-complete CO2-free production by 2033, shifting from traditional blast furnace methods to direct reduction and electric arc furnaces.
