Salzgitter begins construction on green hydrogen plant for low-carbon steel production

Salzgitter has laid the foundation stone for one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen production plants, the German steel producer announced in a press release.

Starting in 2026, the plant will produce around 9,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for carbon-reduced steel production, marking the industrial launch of hydrogen use in SALCOS – Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking. The initiative aims for near carbon-free steel production.

The 100 MW electrolysis plant, supplied on an EPC basis by international technology company Andritz, will use HydrogenPro’s pressurized alkaline electrolysis technology. SALCOS is being developed in stages and includes a direct reduction plant, an electric arc furnace (both already under construction), and the 100 MW electrolysis plant for hydrogen production.

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH plans to introduce products from this new process to the market by 2026. Full conversion to near carbon-free steel production at the Salzgitter facility is expected by 2033.
