Salzgitter breaks ground on new scrap shredder plant

Salzgitter has broken ground on a new large-scale steel scrap shredder at its DEUMU subsidiary in Salzgitter, an investment of around EUR 30 mln (USD 35 mln). The facility will enable processing of high-quality scrap grades, supporting the company’s transition to low-CO2 steel production under its SALCOS program, set to start in 2027.

In preparation, DEUMU has worked with internal research and production teams to develop a dedicated SALCOS scrap grade tailored to the process. Commissioning of the shredder will align with the launch of the program’s first stage.

The project partners include Lindemann GmbH of Dusseldorf and Belgium’s Lybover, while structural steel for the shredder was supplied by Salzgitter subsidiary Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH.
