Salzgitter orders new walking beam furnace to boost decarbonization

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, the largest steel subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, has awarded a major contract to Tenova for the supply of a new walking beam furnace at its plant. The state-of-the-art, energy-efficient furnace will support Salzgitter’s decarbonization strategy and further strengthen Tenova’s footprint in the German market.

Tenova Italimpianti will design, supply, and oversee the installation of the complete system, including the discharging roller table, charging/discharging machine, and all associated electrical, measuring, and control systems, ensuring seamless integration and automation.

With a capacity of 320 tons per hour, the furnace is engineered to process cast steel slabs in both single and double rows. It incorporates a combustion air pre-heating system to lower energy consumption and features hydrogen-compatible burners and oxygen injection zones to optimize combustion and cut fuel use. A heat recovery system will convert waste heat into steam for plant-wide use, further reducing overall energy demand.

This will be the third modern walking beam furnace installed at the Salzgitter Flachstahl site, all supplied by Tenova Italimpianti.
