Severstal invests in expanding flat steel production and logistics at Cherepovets plant

Severstal has completed the first stage of an investment project to boost finished product shipments at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK), a key flat-rolled steel production facility.

The plant has increased production of 2mm hot-rolled pickled galvanized steel, which offers greater durability, strength, and corrosion resistance compared to standard galvanized products. This surge in output has placed additional demand on the loading section of Metal Coating Shop No. 3.

To enhance logistics efficiency and maintain product quality during loading, Severstal has extended the existing railway siding, increasing shipment capacity by 300 tons per day. The project has also created new jobs and includes a modular building for employees near the loading area and production lines.

Production volumes for this high-demand product are expected to rise by 20pct, driven by its applications in civil and infrastructure construction, including light steel thin-walled structures (LSTC), corrugated spiral pipes for roadworks, and industrial storage facilities.

By 2025, Severstal plans to install a new 16-ton electric bridge crane and upgrade two existing cranes with a radio control system to expand the loading area of CPM-3. The full project is set for completion by the end of 2025.
