SHS Group signs long-term green hydrogen supply deal with Verso Energy

The SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar Group, through its subsidiaries Dillinger, Saarstahl, and ROGESA, has signed a long-term agreement with France’s Verso Energy for the supply of at least 6,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. The 10-year contract, set to begin in 2029, marks a major step forward for the Power4Steel decarbonization project and the Franco-German hydrogen economy.

Verso Energy will produce certified renewable hydrogen under its Carling Hydrogen Next Generation project in France, using an electrolyzer powered by renewable electricity. The hydrogen will be transported via the Moselle-Saar Hydrogen Conversion pipeline network to SHS’s steel plants in Dillingen and Volklingen, where it will be used alongside steel scrap and new direct reduction and electric arc furnace technologies.

The SHS Group expects the transition to cut carbon emissions by up to 55pct by the early 2030s, meeting funding requirements and positioning itself as the largest hydrogen customer in the region, with plans to use up to 120,000 tons annually in the future.
