DP World and the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) have inaugurated the South Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, marking a key milestone in DP World’s USD 800 mln expansion program aimed at strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as a global trade hub.
The three-year redevelopment has transformed the terminal into one of the region’s most advanced and sustainable container facilities, more than doubling its capacity from 1.8 mln TEUs to 4 mln TEUs, with plans to reach 5 mln TEUs as demand grows, DP World said in a statement.
The modernized terminal integrates automation and digitalization, significantly improving operational efficiency. Smart systems have reduced gate transaction times from two minutes to just 10 seconds, while IoT-enabled cargo tracking and AI-powered tallying enhance record accuracy.
New automated and electrified yard cranes have been introduced, along with an expanded quay crane fleet, set to grow from 14 to 17 by the end of 2025 and eventually 22 as capacity reaches 5 mln TEUs. The terminal features a 2,150-metre quay, including an 18-metre deep-water berth, allowing it to accommodate five ultra-large container vessels simultaneously.
Adjacent to the terminal, DP World is developing the 415,000-square-metre Jeddah Logistics Park, the largest integrated facility of its kind in Saudi Arabia, offering warehousing, distribution, and freight forwarding services. Completion is scheduled for Q2 2026.
