SSAB and JTK Power develop world’s first low-emission marine engine silencer

SSAB and JTK Power have jointly developed the world’s first marine engine silencer made from low-emission SSAB Zero steel, marking a milestone in decarbonizing marine industry components.

SSAB supplied around four tons of SSAB Zero steel, produced from recycled steel using fossil-free energy. Manufactured in an electric arc furnace, SSAB Zero cuts CO2-equivalent emissions by up to 77pct compared with SSAB’s blast-furnace hot-rolled steel. JTK Power said the use of this material reduces the silencers emissions by nearly half versus a conventional design.

JTK Power, which supplies steel solutions for power plants, construction, and marine and process industries, noted that most of its carbon footprint is embedded in raw materials rather than its own operations. As a result, collaboration with steelmakers such as SSAB is critical to achieving meaningful emissions reductions.

The silencer was developed using weather-resistant SSAB Weathering steel based on the SSAB Zero platform, delivered as sheets in 4mm thickness. SSAB said the material performs identically to conventional steel in cutting, bending and welding processes, allowing seamless integration into existing production.

SSAB Zero steel is currently sourced from SSAB’s U.S. operations. The company plans to begin production in Sweden once its new electric arc furnace in Oxelosund is completed by the end of 2026, which is expected to increase capacity and shorten delivery times.
