SSAB has signed a contract with Danieli to supply advanced, highly automated technology for its upcoming mini-mill in Lulea, Sweden, following an Early Service Agreement signed in July 2024.
The new mini-mill, with an annual capacity of 2.5 mln tons, will include two 210-ton electric arc furnaces (Digimelters), advanced secondary metallurgy, a caster, and a direct strip rolling mill. It will produce hot-rolled strip ranging from 1.3 mm to 25.4 mm in thickness and up to 2,100 mm in width, with coil weights of up to 40 tons. A cold rolling complex will also be installed to expand SSAB’s premium product offering for the mobility sector.
Danieli’s solution includes Q-One power feeders with thermal recovery for district heating, ECS continuous scrap charging, and the MeltModel suite for real-time melting control. The plant will feature two twin-ladle refining stations and twin-tank vacuum degassers to support production of high-grade steels. The endless scrap charging system is designed to boost furnace efficiency and cut NOx emissions, supporting SSAB’s shift toward fossil-free steelmaking.
Once operational, the mini-mill will replace SSAB’s current blast furnace operations in Lulea, cutting Sweden’s CO2 emissions by 7pct, in addition to the 3pct reduction expected from the ongoing Oxelosund transition.
