SSAB to expand capacity with new cold rolling complex in Lulea

SSAB, a global steel manufacturing leader, has awarded SMS group an Early Services Agreement for a cold rolling complex at its Lulea, Sweden facility. This project highlights SSAB’s commitment to sustainable steel production and green technologies.

With an annual capacity of 1.3 mln tons, the complex will support SSAB’s production of third-generation advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) for the automotive sector. The project includes advanced technology such as a pickling line/tandem cold mill with CVC technology, continuous galvanizing and annealing lines, and a recoiling and inspection line, essential for producing SSAB’s specialty products.

The facility will feature fully electrically heated DREVER furnaces, minimizing the carbon footprint with induction and electrical radiant tubes. DUMA-BANDZINK air-knives will ensure precise coating thickness control, while AMOVA robotics and logistics systems will optimize material flow and streamline operations. Additionally, the project includes major auxiliary plants like acid regeneration, roll shop, coil logistics, and water treatment facilities.

The cold rolling complex will handle coil widths up to 1,900 mm and thicknesses from 0.30 to 2.5 mm, offering versatile product options.
