SSAB has signed an agreement with Vattenfall to supply 120 tons of fossil-free steel for what will become the world’s first and largest dam gate made with near-zero carbon emissions from the ironmaking process.
The 21-meter-wide, 11-meter-high structure will showcase how SSAB’s fossil-free steel can be applied to major infrastructure projects. The material is produced using fossil-free sponge iron, a breakthrough technology developed jointly by SSAB, Vattenfall, and LKAB under the HYBRIT initiative.
The order strengthens the partnership between SSAB and Vattenfall in advancing fossil-free industrial solutions.
SSAB said the project demonstrates that large, complex steel structures can be produced with a drastically lower climate footprint, paving the way for emission-free materials of the future.
