In March 2025, the U.S. imported a total of 2.495 mln tons of steel, including 1.819 mln tons of finished steel, representing increases of 11.4pct and 11.9pct, respectively, compared to the previous month, according to preliminary data from the Census Bureau, as reported by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Year-to-date, total steel imports are up 3.6pct, while finished steel imports have risen by 1.6pct compared to 2024.
In March, finished steel accounted for an estimated 21pct of the U.S. market share, with a 22pct market share for the first quarter of 2025.
Notable steel products with significant import increases in March compared to February include reinforcing bars (up 86pct), line pipe (up 48pct), oil country goods (up 41pct), sheets and strips of other metallic coatings (up 40pct), and cold rolled sheets (up 23pct).
The top suppliers in March were Canada (495,000 tons, up 3pct from February), Brazil (429,000 tons, down 4pct), Mexico (389,000 tons, up 40pct), South Korea (253,000 tons, up 30pct), and Taiwan (117,000 tons, up 44pct).
