India’s steel imports surged in FY25 (ended March 2025), while exports remained subdued, according to data from the Ministry of Steel.
Steel imports rose 14.6pct YoY to 9.5 mln tons, whereas exports fell by 35pct to 4.9 mln tons over the same period.
In response to concerns raised by the domestic steel industry, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has recommended a 12pct safeguard duty on all steel imports for approximately 200 days. An official notification on its implementation is still awaited.
Meanwhile, India’s crude steel production reached 151.1 mln tons in FY25, a 4.7pct increase from the previous year. Steel consumption also saw a notable rise, up 10.2pct YoY to 150.2 mln tons.
