Tata Steel has awarded a major contract to Welsh engineering firm Systems Group for the first phase of refurbishing its two continuous casters at the Port Talbot plant in South Wales.
The Welsh company will handle critical structural upgrades and pipework replacement on the casters, which transform liquid steel from the upcoming Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) into solid slabs.
This refurbishment is part of Tata Steel UK plan to transition to greener steelmaking. The life extension of the casters supports preparations for the new EAF, expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and projected to cut Port Talbot’s carbon emissions by around 90pct, roughly 5 mln tons of CO2 annually.
The project’s first phase includes replacing over 1.5 miles of pipework and two large water tanks. Future phases will involve further upgrades, including new equipment, structural enhancements, and advanced technologies such as variable-speed drives and next-gen process control systems.
Tata Steel plans to award additional contracts in the coming months for further electrical, mechanical, and automation work.
