Thyssenkrupp is expanding its low-carbon steel production research through a collaboration with BlueScope Steel, focusing on smelting units crucial for transitioning to carbon-neutral steel.
The partnership aims to optimize the operation of two new 100 MW smelters that will process 2.5 mln tons of directly reduced iron (DRI) annually, utilizing renewable electricity in a continuous, closed-system process. This approach retains existing steel production stages, ensuring high-quality steel grades while minimizing investments. The collaboration, set to last four years, will refine plant management and process efficiency, leveraging BlueScope’s experience with similar smelters.
Additionally, the project will explore sustainable uses for smelter slag, continuing Thyssenkrupp’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the circular economy.
