Tokyo Steel upgrades galvanizing line at Okayama Works

Tokyo Steel has awarded Primetals Technologies, in collaboration with thermal tech specialist Chugai Ro and electrification provider Hitachi, a contract to upgrade its hot-dip galvanizing line at the Okayama Works. The revamped line is set to begin operations in Q1 2027.

The upgrade will enhance an existing annealing setup, with key additions including induction heating at the front end to boost heating capacity and improved cooling at the back end. These changes will enable the line to produce both cold-rolled and galvanized coil, enhancing operational flexibility.

Primetals will oversee engineering and supply for terminal equipment and modifications to the skin pass mill, while also managing the annealing furnace scope with its partners, along with installation and commissioning supervision.

A leader in electric arc furnace-based steelmaking, Tokyo Steel is known for its broad product range and holds Japan’s top domestic production volume for H-beams. The company recently introduced its low-carbon “Almost Zero” steel brand, which is being used in major redevelopment projects across the country.
