Tosyali Algerie advances green steel ambitions with new renewable hydrogen initiative

Tosyali Algerie is set to explore the development of an integrated green hydrogen project in partnership with Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and Hecate Renewable Energy. The project will use renewable energy to support the production of low-carbon, high-value steel products.

The initiative, based at Tosyali’s steel manufacturing facilities in Oran, Algeria, aims to reduce carbon emissions, expand renewable energy use, and promote green steel in the region.

This project builds on earlier feasibility studies and Memorandums of Understanding signed in 2024. One MoU, signed on July 24 between Tosyali and Sonatrach, focused on green hydrogen production using renewable energy for green steelmaking at the Tosyali complex. Additional MoUs involved Sonatrach and Hecate Renewable Energy, exploring broader renewable energy development in Algeria.

A new MoU is expected to be signed soon between all four partners, Tosyali, Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and Hecate, to move the project forward. It will proceed in two phases: the first to evaluate feasibility, suitability, and profitability; and the second to implement the development, contributing to the partners’ shared goals in energy transition.

Tosyali Algerie’s flat steel complex project includes a DRI plant, EAF, hot and cold rolling mills, and a galvanizing mill. Tosyali also produces rebar and wire rod with an annual capacity of 3.8 mln tons and operates a 400,000 tons per year helical submerged arc welding pipe mill in Algeria.
