SSAB, Rheinmetall sign LoI for fossil-free steel supply

SSAB has signed a letter of intent with Rheinmetall for the supply of fossil-free steel, marking the first time a defence equipment manufacturer has committed to using decarbonized steel in production.

The cooperation will begin with deliveries of SSAB Zero, with volumes set to increase over time. Future supplies will also include SSAB Fossil-free steel, produced using HYBRIT technology.

SSAB Zero is produced using recycled steel and fossil-free energy, resulting in virtually zero fossil carbon emissions without compromising performance or quality. SSAB said the agreement demonstrates growing demand for low-emission materials in highly regulated and technology-intensive sectors.

SSAB developed the world’s first fossil-free steel in 2021 as a proof of concept using HYBRIT technology, which replaces coal with hydrogen in the steelmaking process, emitting water instead of CO2. Since then, the company has made pilot deliveries to selected partners across multiple industries.

SSAB is a leading producer of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) and quenched and tempered (Q&T) steels, with an annual crude steel capacity of about 8.8 mln tons across its operations in Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
