Tata Steel commissions scrap-based EAF in Ludhiana

Tata Steel has commissioned its first scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) in India, marking a step toward expanding low-emission steelmaking capacity, the company said.

The facility, located in Ludhiana, Punjab, has an annual production capacity of 0.75 mln tons of long steel products and uses scrap as the primary raw material. The project aligns with the company’s strategy to increase the share of scrap-based production and reduce carbon emissions.

Designed to support low-carbon steelmaking, the plant will utilize nearly 50pct renewable energy and operate on 100pct steel scrap. Around 40pct of the scrap requirement will be sourced from Tata Steel’s recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana.

The facility will produce construction-grade steel rebar under the company’s Tata Tiscon brand, strengthening its downstream presence in northern India and improving its ability to serve regional demand.

Tata Steel Group is among the leading global steel producers, with an annual crude steel capacity of around 35 mln tons.
