Scrap import price uptrend continues amid cautious buying sentiment

Turkey’s scrap import prices continued to firm this week, reaching around USD 400 per ton CFR, up from USD 390-400 per ton last week. Some offers, particularly from U.S. suppliers, were heard above USD 400 per ton.

The increase was supported by higher freight and energy costs linked to Middle East tensions, along with limited scrap availability.

However, the continued price rise has slowed buying activity, as Turkish mills face squeezed margins amid weak finished steel demand. Still, market participants expect mills to return to the market in the near term to replenish inventories. Rising billet prices and ongoing logistics disruptions may also encourage additional scrap procurement.

Higher scrap costs have pushed up Turkish long steel export offers, with rebar heard at USD 595-605 per ton FOB, compared with USD 580-590 per ton previously. Wire rod offers also increased to USD 620-630 per ton FOB from USD 610-620 per ton last week.
