GravitHy awards FEED contract for low-carbon HBI plant in Fos-sur-Mer

GravitHy has appointed engineering firm Hatch to carry out front-end engineering design (FEED) for its planned low-carbon iron production plant in Fos-sur-Mer, southern France.

The facility is designed to produce 2 mln tons per year of hot briquetted iron (HBI) using hydrogen as the reducing agent, supporting steelmakers’ transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) production and lower emissions.

Under the contract, Hatch will define the plant’s technical configuration, including process integration, energy systems, cost estimates and project execution planning.

The project integrates large-scale hydrogen production with direct reduction ironmaking, with a focus on optimizing energy use and operational flexibility.

Construction is expected to begin in 2028, subject to a final investment decision.
