UAE-based steel and building materials producer, EMSTEEL has supplied EZ19-700 low-carbon sheet piles for the Bridgewater Canal wall replacement project in the UK, through distributor Sheet Piling (UK) Ltd.
The project involved installation along a canal section accessible only from the water, requiring a specialist floating-platform approach. Sheet Piling (UK), working for Cheetham Hill Construction Ltd, executed the piling works using an 18m by 10m floating pontoon supported by a storage barge and service craft.
All operations were carried out from the floating system to address site constraints, including confined working areas and soft embankments, while avoiding disruption to towpaths and surrounding land. Stability assessments were completed in advance to ensure safe execution.
The project utilized EMSTEEL’s EZ19-700 GreenSteelPile, produced from 100pct recycled scrap via an electric arc furnace route, offering reduced carbon emissions while maintaining required structural performance for waterway infrastructure.
Installation was performed using a 35-ton excavator-mounted piling rig with vibratory methods to minimize environmental impact and disturbance to canal banks.
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has an annual production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement. Its steel segment, Emirates Steel, produces wire rod, rebar, heavy sections and sheet piles.
