Tata Steel to upgrade Jamshedpur blast furnace with low-emission technology

Tata Steel has signed definitive agreements with Paul Wurth, part of SMS Group, to implement EASyMelt (electrically assisted syngas smelter) technology.

The company plans to carry out the first industrial-scale demonstration of the technology at its ‘E’ blast furnace (649 m3) at the Jamshedpur Works in a phased manner. The project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50pct compared with baseline blast furnace operations.

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed in June 2023 and completion of a front-end engineering study, after which Tata Steel decided to proceed with implementation.

The project forms part of Tata Steel’s broader decarbonizations strategy and its target to achieve net zero emissions by 2045.

Tata Steel is among the world’s leading steel producers, with annual crude steel capacity of around 35 mln tons.
