SSAB awards marine pipeline system contract for Lulea green steel project

Georg Fischer (GF), a Swiss industrial company specializing in piping systems and building flow solutions, announced that it will deliver a turnkey marine intake and onshore pipeline system for SSAB’s new green steel plant in Lulea, Sweden, as part of one of Europe’s major industrial decarbonization projects.

SSAB is constructing an electrified steel mill with an annual production capacity of 2.5 mln tons, aimed at producing advanced steel products with lower carbon emissions. GF’s Industry and Infrastructure Flow Solutions division will supply the system based on its Weholite solution to support the facility’s cooling water requirements.

The system will deliver water to the shoreline pumping station, from where cooling water will be transferred to the steel mill’s heat exchangers for use in the steel production process.

The contract, awarded by project contractor NYAB, includes large-diameter pipelines ranging from DN 800 mm to DN 1600 mm, with a total length of around 12 km, including fittings. GF will also undertake welding, assembly, and pressure testing of the installed system.

The project is scheduled to run from the second quarter of 2026 through the fourth quarter of 2027.

Headquartered in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, GF was founded in 1802 and operates in 46 countries. The company focuses on piping systems for the transport of water, chemicals, and gases, as well as water infrastructure and energy-efficient building solutions.

SSAB is a producer of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) and quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel products, with an annual crude steel production capacity of approximately 8.8 mln tons across operations in Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
