Amreli Steels extends Karachi rolling mill shutdown for another year

Amreli Steels Limited has extended the suspension of operations at its S.I.T.E. rolling mill in Karachi for a further one year, citing continued weak market conditions and unfavorable economic factors.

The company said a review of the plant’s operational status concluded that the underlying market and economic conditions that led to the temporary shutdown remain unchanged. As a result, it has decided to prolong the suspension in the interest of prudent operational and financial management.

Amreli added that it will continue to monitor market developments and periodically reassess the possibility of restarting the S.I.T.E. rolling mill. Any decision to resume operations will depend on a meaningful improvement in the broader economic and steel market environment.

The company noted that its Dhabeji facility remains fully operational and is capable of meeting current and anticipated customer demand. The Dhabeji plant accounts for 100pct of the company’s billet production capacity and approximately 70pct of its rebar manufacturing capacity.

As previously reported by MESTEEL, Amreli initially suspended operations at its S.I.T.E. rolling mill in September 2024 and the shutdown has remained in place as Pakistan’s steel industry continued to face weak demand and challenging economic conditions. The S.I.T.E. plant represents around 30pct of the company’s total production capacity.

Amreli Steels is one of Pakistan’s leading steel producers, with an annual billet production capacity of 600,000 tons and rebar manufacturing capacity of 605,000 tons.
