JFE Steel Corporation and Tomakomai Kuribayashi Transportation Co., Ltd. announced that the shipping company has selected JFE Steel’s “JGreeX” green steel products for 250 tons of major steel components in the construction of a new warehouse in Harumi, Tomakomai, Hokkaido. Construction begins this August and is scheduled to be completed by July 2025. This marks the first use of green steel by the shipping company and the first application of JGreeX in Hokkaido.
The use of JGreeX is expected to reduce the total CO2 emissions associated with the warehouse’s construction by about 500 tons compared to conventional steel. JFE Steel uses a mass-balance approach to quantify CO2 emission reductions, following the Japan Iron and Steel Federation’s guidelines.
Tomakomai Kuribayashi aims to become carbon neutral by using next-generation biodiesel fuel and now, low-impact materials in warehouse construction. Japan’s warehousing and transportation industries are pursuing green transformation initiatives to support the nationwide goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, emphasizing the use of materials with smaller carbon footprints.
