Sweden’s SSAB has appointed AFRY as the main engineering partner for its fossil-free steel mini-mill project in Lulea. AFRY will provide basic and detailed engineering services from 2024 to 2026 as part of SSAB’s transition to fossil-free steel production.
The new mini-mill will utilize electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and is expected to produce 2.5 mln tons of fossil-free steel annually. Upon completion, SSAB will decommission its existing blast furnace facility in Lulea, contributing to a 7pct reduction in Sweden’s annual CO2 emissions, in addition to a 3pct reduction from the Oxelosund mill conversion.
AFRY’s work will encompass the melting and hot rolling complex, including electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, thin slab casting, and hot rolling, along with the required infrastructure and auxiliary services.
The startup of the new production line is anticipated for the end of 2028.
