Primetals Technologies has received the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for its digital assistant systems at SSAB’s Hameenlinna plant in Finland, marking the first use of its digital solutions for coil identification and pickling defect detection. The AI-powered system helps identify surface quality issues, reducing production interruptions from strip breakage and defects.
In the metals industry, processing coils out of sequence or with undetected defects can cause delays and equipment damage. To prevent this, AI-driven computer vision solutions have been implemented for automated coil identification and strip surface monitoring. These systems minimize downtime, prevent coil mismatches, and reduce scrap, with real-time results visualized through augmented video streams.
A key function is early-stage coil identification to ensure proper storage. A strategically placed camera detects coil and saddle numbers while still on the delivery train, transmitting data to a coil yard management system for optimized crane operations. As coils move onto the entry walking beam, the system cross-checks identification numbers with the production schedule. If a mismatch is found, the operator is notified immediately.
The gathered insights are sent to automation systems for further analysis, allowing real-time adjustments like modifying rolling speeds or cutting plans. At SSAB Hameenlinna, the system will continue to be refined and trained to detect new coil markings and defects. SSAB has praised its high accuracy, even when tracking fast-moving trains with a standard camera.
