SSAB and Fassi join forces for sustainable crane manufacturing

SSAB and Italian crane manufacturer Fassi have signed an agreement for future deliveries of low-emission steel. The deal covers both fossil-free steel made from iron ore and SSAB Zero, produced from recycled scrap, for use in Fassi’s hydraulic and truck-mounted cranes.

Fassi, a global leader in loader cranes, has long utilized SSAB’s high-strength Strenx steel to enhance lifting capacity, reduce weight, and extend reach. Now, the two companies are expanding their partnership to incorporate SSAB’s low-carbon steel, enabling Fassi to produce cranes with a significantly reduced CO2 footprint.

Steel production contributes around 7% of global CO2 emissions, with both primary and recycled steel generating emissions. To mitigate this, SSAB is investing in innovative technologies to achieve near-zero fossil carbon emissions in steelmaking.

SSAB Zero, which has been available commercially since 2023, is made from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas. Meanwhile, SSAB’s fossil-free steel, developed with HYBRIT technology, replaces coal with hydrogen and renewable energy, nearly eliminating CO2 emissions. SSAB produced the world’s first fossil-free steel in 2021 and has since made pilot deliveries across various industries.
