SSAB advances green transition with EAF in Oxelosund

SSAB is replacing the blast furnaces at its Oxelosund, Sweden, facility with an electric arc furnace and upgraded raw material handling. The new production system is expected to be operational by late 2026, marking the first step in SSAB’s green transition across its Nordic production network.

According to SSAB, the shift to an electric arc furnace will enable faster deliveries of SSAB Zero, a steel product made from recycled materials and fossil-free energy, with minimal carbon emissions. Demand for SSAB Zero has been growing since its introduction in 2023 at the company’s Iowa plant, and the Oxelosund upgrade will expand the product portfolio. The project is progressing as planned, with all necessary permits secured and sufficient fossil-free electricity supply confirmed.

The Oxelosund facility produces Hardox – wear plate, Strenx – high-strength structural steel, Armox – protection plate, and Toolox – engineering and tool steel.
