SSAB and Putzmeister partner for fossil-free steel in construction equipment

SSAB has signed an agreement with global construction equipment manufacturer Putzmeister to supply fossil-free steel for products like concrete pump trucks and mixers. As construction and manufacturing contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, collaborative efforts are essential to reducing their environmental impact.

SSAB and Putzmeister share a long-standing partnership focused on innovation. By utilizing Strenx high-strength structural steel and Hardox wear plates, Putzmeister has developed lighter, stronger chassis, pump crane booms, and mixer drums, enhancing performance while lowering emissions.

Now, the companies are taking the next step by adopting HYBRIT technology, which replaces coking coal with green hydrogen and fossil-free electricity, cutting steel production’s carbon footprint. Developed by SSAB in collaboration with LKAB and Vattenfall, this method emits water instead of CO2.

Steel production is responsible for 7pct of global CO2 emissions, with both primary and recycled steel contributing. To address this, SSAB is investing in near-zero carbon production technologies. SSAB Zero, made from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas, has been commercially available since 2023. Meanwhile, SSAB’s fossil-free steel, produced with HYBRIT technology, was first successfully tested in 2021 and has since been delivered to various industries.
