Utility’s H2Gen produces clean hydrogen using steel plant emissions

Utility, a leader in affordable and reliable hydrogen solutions, has successfully operated its H2Gen system at a major steel plant in North America. The system achieved a global first by producing hydrogen directly from steel plant off-gas (blast furnace gas) in a single-step process under real-world conditions. Additionally, H2Gen is the first system to generate clean hydrogen from water without requiring electricity.

Steel production is among the most energy-intensive industries, facing major challenges in reducing its carbon footprint. Alternative steelmaking technologies demand massive capital investment, and on-site clean hydrogen production has been limited by space and infrastructure constraints. Balancing sustainability with productivity remains a key hurdle, along with the lack of cost-effective carbon capture solutions.

Utility’s H2Gen system addresses these challenges by utilizing industrial off-gases to produce hydrogen efficiently. Its compact design enables on-site production while delivering concentrated COâ‚‚ for economical carbon capture. With over 3,000 hours of successful operation, H2Gen has proven to be a scalable, cost-effective, and commercially viable clean energy solution for industries such as steel, biogas-to-hydrogen, chemicals, refining, oil & gas, power, and hydrogen-powered data centers.

Based in Houston, Texas, Utility specializes in off-gas-to-value solutions for hard-to-abate industries, offering a pathway to economic decarbonization without relying on electricity. Utility Global, Inc. is a portfolio company of Ara Partners, a private equity firm focused on industrial decarbonization investments.
