Fagersta Stainless, part of the Marcegaglia Group since 2023, has signed an agreement with Danieli to install a new stainless steel blooming mill at its historic plant in Fagersta, Sweden. The mill will be capable of producing 70,000 tons annually of high-grade round bars and billets, including Inconel and SuperDuplex grades, ranging from 35 to 220 mm in diameter.
The project will enhance the plant’s product mix and operational flexibility. It will support three production paths: direct processing of ingots or blooms into billets for immediate rolling at the existing MH wire rod mill; additional rolling via a new reversing shiftable stand; or extended processing through a continuous mill with in-line quenching and a new finishing area.
The scope also includes the modernization and automation of a historic breakdown mill stand from 1943, along with the installation of six hydrogen-ready, low-emission pit furnaces by Danieli Centro Combustion. Feedstock handling will be streamlined by an automated crane with smart video monitoring, provided by Danieli Centro Cranes.
The facility will operate using advanced process control systems from Danieli Automation and incorporate several proprietary technologies. Plant startup is scheduled for the end of 2026.
