Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), a subsidiary of the Salzgitter Group, has launched tenders for long-term solar power supply and on-site battery storage, advancing its transition to low-carbon steel production under the SALCOS program.
The company is seeking partners to supply 150 MWp of electricity from ground-mounted photovoltaic systems through power purchase agreements (PPAs), with registrations open until June 22, 2025. Additionally, SZFG is inviting bids for the construction and operation of a large-scale battery storage system at its steelworks. The system will help balance renewable energy fluctuations and ensure consistent steel production.
These tenders are part of Salzgitter’s broader plan to phase out carbon-based steelmaking and switch to low-CO2crude steel using renewable energy. Once fully implemented, the transformation is expected to cut SZFG’s direct CO2 emissions by around 95pct. The initiative underscores Salzgitter’s commitment to climate goals and reinforces its role in driving sustainable steel production.
