EMSTEEL enhances rolling mill capabilities for high-strength steel beams at Abu Dhabi plant

UAE-based long steel producer EMSTEEL has chosen Danieli to deliver a turnkey Thermo-Mechanical Control Process (TMCP) system for its Rolling Mill #4 in Abu Dhabi. The project will enhance EMSTEEL’s production capabilities, enabling the manufacture of high-strength beams that meet Grade 80 ASTM A913/A913M and S500ML EN 10025-4 standards, with beam web depths up to 1036 mm, flange thicknesses up to 77 mm, and linear weights of 634 kg/m.

These high-strength beams, produced from low-alloy steels, offer excellent weldability and low-temperature toughness, making them suitable for demanding structural applications.

The TMCP will utilize Danieli’s Selective Flange Cooling (SFC) technology, either alone or combined with Quenching & Self-Tempering (QST) to treat the entire beam. SFC units will be installed at the entry and exit of the Ultra-Flexible Reversing (UFR) mill, while the QST system will follow at the exit. Danieli’s QST system uses adjustable cooling banks and manifolds tailored to beam dimensions and has demonstrated up to 30pct reduction in water usage during testing at the Danieli Research Center.

The TMCP system will be fully integrated into the mill’s process control, featuring dedicated PLC, HMI, and TWS components supplied by Danieli Automation for automatic operation. Danieli Construction will manage all on-site execution.

The new high-strength beam products will enable cost-effective construction solutions, reducing material weight and welding needs, across applications like high-rise buildings, long-span bridges, seismic structures, and offshore projects.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has a production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement annually. The group exports to over 70 markets, accounting for 30pct of its sales. The company offers a diverse range of steel products, including wire rod, rebar, heavy sections, and sheet piles.
