Jiangsu Shagang modernizes wire rod mill

Primetals Technologies has received the Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) from Jiangsu Shagang for the successful upgrade of the wire rod outlet and the rebuilding of the Morgan Reducing/Sizing Mill at Line No. 3 of Shagang’s sixth mill in Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province. This modernization is part of a broader initiative to enhance product quality and production efficiency across Shagang’s facilities.

The upgrade significantly improved dimensional tolerances and surface quality of the finished rod products. Early feedback from end-users has been positive, particularly regarding metallurgical and dimensional performance.

The project included new equipment for the reducing/sizing mill, a Morgan Intelligent Pinch Roll, sixth-generation laying head, high-speed shear, and a full mechatronics package. Engineering and supervision services for the water-cooling line, Morgan Stelmor Controlled Cooling Conveyor, and reform tub area were also provided.

A key feature of the project was the relocation and upgrade of the Morgan Reducing/Sizing Mill, including enhancements to its external gearbox. This advanced mill enables precise sizing and low-temperature thermomechanical rolling, resulting in a refined microstructure and reducing the need for downstream annealing.

Founded in 1975, Jiangsu Shagang Group is one of China’s leading steel producers, manufacturing deformed bar, wire rod, special bar, plate, and forged steel products for global markets.
