SMS and The Systems Group team up to boost safety in steelmaking

SMS group has announced a strategic partnership with The Systems Group, a U.S.-based innovator in the metals industry, to deliver safer, more sustainable, and low-maintenance solutions for steelmaking plants using electric arc furnaces (EAF) and secondary metallurgy units.

Central to the collaboration is Spray-Cooled, a patented cooling technology developed in the 1980s and owned by The Systems Group since 1999. Widely used in EAF operations, Spray-Cooled will now be integrated into SMS’s plant solutions worldwide, including roofs, sidewalls, hoods, and ducts, both for new builds and system upgrades.

Unlike conventional high-pressure tubular cooling, Spray-Cooled operates at atmospheric pressure, eliminating the risk of dangerous water leaks in melt shops. It also offers advantages in heat retention, energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and ease of maintenance, with adaptable designs for various furnace configurations.

The partnership combines SMS’s global engineering capabilities with The Systems Group’s proven cooling technology, providing steelmakers with a fully integrated, high-performance solution focused on safety, reliability, and long equipment life.
