CMC modernizes rolling mill in Tennessee

Commercial Metals Company (CMC) has successfully completed the modernization of its rolling mill in Tennessee, in partnership with Automazioni Industriali Capitanio (AIC). The project, delivered on schedule, focused on upgrading drive systems, automation, and operator safety.

AIC supplied new AC drive panels, a DC bus module, and water treatment system components including pumps and fans. The company managed the entire process, from engineering and design to manufacturing, testing, commissioning, and documentation.

As part of the upgrade, AIC delivered a full automation and safety package, including safety PLC panels and local control stations. The HMI system was enhanced for integrated drive monitoring and control, with improved interfaces and alarm management. The IBA system was also updated to incorporate signals from the new equipment without requiring additional hardware.

PLC software was upgraded to support network drive control, adapt HMI functions, and optimize impact compensation and tension control. Integration with the existing engineering station was completed using Drive Composer Tool, and the project also included a new control room.

Founded in 1915, CMC operates over 200 facilities across the U.S., U.K., Central Europe, and Asia, and is a leading producer of rebar and long steel products such as merchant bars and wire rod.
