Voestalpine to supply steel for BYD’s first EU automotive plant

Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine has been selected as a key supplier by Chinese automaker BYD for its upcoming passenger car plant in Szeged, Hungary, BYD’s first production facility in Europe.

Beginning in autumn 2025, Voestalpine will deliver high-quality flat steel for car bodies and outer skin components directly from its Linz production site. The partnership marks a significant step in strengthening Voestalpine’s presence in the European automotive supply chain, particularly in the fast-growing electric vehicle segment.

Voestalpine’s advanced steel products are already widely used across the automotive sector, including in exterior components such as doors, side panels, and hoods, as well as structural elements like bumpers, cross beams, and longitudinal supports. The company also supplies critical safety parts for seat belts and airbags, and offers specialized materials for electric vehicles, including electrical steel strip.
