Celsa Barcelona’s medium section mill in Castellbisbal, Spain, has successfully completed a major automation upgrade by SMS group, executed without halting production. The project culminated in the final acceptance certificate (FAC), reinforcing the mill’s operational efficiency and long-term competitiveness.
Originally commissioned by SMS group in 2001 and modernized in 2020, the mill has an annual capacity of 900,000 tons and produces high-quality long rolled products for the construction sector, including beams, angles, and channels.
The recent upgrade replaced the outdated level 2 automation system, which posed security and performance risks. The new X-Pact Level 2 system introduces a modern, open software architecture that supports future digital enhancements and simplifies maintenance.
Key features include X-Pact Vision webHMI with 4K visualization, allowing operators to monitor and control the entire tandem mill from a single screen, streamlining operations and boosting productivity compared to the previous multi-screen setup.
