Scrap import market steady amid weak finished steel sales

Turkey’s imported scrap prices remained largely stable this week, as buying activity slowed due to weak finished steel sales and resistance from steel mills to accept higher scrap offers. Import offers were assessed in the range of USD 340-345 per ton CFR.

The mid-week holiday further dampened market activity. Domestic and export finished steel sales remained subdued, while high production costs continued to limit mills’ appetite for fresh scrap cargoes at higher prices.

Some market participants believe that reduced purchasing from Turkish mills, combined with the seasonal slowdown, could eventually pressure suppliers to lower their prices.

On the finished steel side, export offers held steady over the past week. Turkish rebar was offered at USD 535-545 per ton FOB, while wire rod offers ranged between USD 550-560 per ton FOB.
