Iron ore futures edge lower as weak property data weighs on sentiment

Iron ore futures declined on Monday as weak economic data dampened market sentiment, though firm near-term fundamentals helped limit losses.

China’s economy showed further strain in August, with sluggish domestic demand and a prolonged property downturn weighing on key indicators. New home prices fell 0.3pct month-on-month, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The property sector, once a major steel consumer, remains under pressure, with developers cutting prices to raise cash and distressed sales adding to the supply glut, local media reported. Weaker confidence is also prompting more owners to put homes on the market, deepening the imbalance in both new and secondhand housing.

Even so, the near-term iron ore outlook remains firm on expectations of restocking demand ahead of October holidays and improved steel consumption with better seasonal weather.

On the Dalian Commodity Exchange, the most-traded January iron ore contract fell 0.31pct to 796 yuan (USD 111.8) per ton. Coking coal futures rose 4.62pct to 1,187.5 yuan (USD 167), while coke climbed 4.4pct to 1,688.5 yuan (USD 237) per ton.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, rebar gained 0.93pct to 3,136 yuan (USD 440), HRC increased 0.87pct to 3,370 yuan (USD 473), wire rod rose 0.37pct to 3,288 yuan (USD 462), and stainless steel advanced 1.2pct to 13,070 yuan (USD 1,836) per ton.
