The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), citing preliminary Census Bureau data, reported that the U.S. imported 1.86 mln tons of steel in August 2025, including 1.4 mln tons of finished steel. Both categories declined 16.8pct compared to July.
Year-to-date, total steel imports are down 7pct and finished steel imports are lower by 10.6pct versus 2024. Finished steel import market share was estimated at 16pct in August and 20pct for the first eight months of 2025.
The largest suppliers in August were Canada (304,000 tons, up 1pct vs. July), Brazil (269,000 tons, down 11pct), Mexico (195,000 tons, down 23pct), South Korea (176,000 tons, down 47pct), and Japan (128,000 tons, up 82pct).
