Jiangsu Lihuai Steel, a subsidiary of Jiangsu Shagang Group, has ordered a 100 MW-class gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant from Mitsubishi Power to be built at its steelworks in Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province. The project is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.
The plant will use Mitsubishi Power’s newly developed M100S gas turbine, designed to run on blast furnace gas (BFG) and other by-product gases from steel production. Compact and efficient, the M100S delivers 100 MW output in combined cycle mode, offering a modern replacement for conventional boiler-turbine-generator (BTG) units widely used in China’s steel industry.
The M100S draws on Mitsubishi’s experience with large BFG-fired turbines and advanced JAC natural gas turbines, enabling flexible operation, rapid load response, and reduced emissions. By harnessing by-product gases such as those from blast furnaces, coke ovens, and converters, the turbine supports both energy efficiency and decarbonization goals in steelmaking.
Mitsubishi Power will manufacture the turbine in Japan, with additional equipment sourced locally in China. Technical support will be provided during installation and commissioning.
Jiangsu Shagang Group, one of the world’s largest steel producers, already operates five Mitsubishi Power turbines and continues to expand low-carbon power generation within its operations.
