Posco and Hanwha Ocean have signed an MOU in Seoul to jointly develop ultra-high strength, giga-class, steel for next-generation naval ships.
The collaboration covers six areas, including steel materials, welding technology, and hull applications, with R&D expected to conclude within two to three years.
The new rolled steel plate combines structural safety, protection performance, and welding reliability, while being up to four times stronger than conventional steel. It is designed to reduce vessel weight and enhance ballistic resistance, making it especially suited for combat ships and unmanned surface vessels.
