Outokumpu’s Calvert mill in Alabama has been recognized by Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) for its efforts to reduce environmental impact, marking the third consecutive year it has received PEP’s Environmental Stewardship Award.
The recognition highlights Outokumpu’s innovative project to replace soft lime with straight limestone in the electric arc furnace (EAF), a move that reduces CO2 emissions, boosts efficiency, and lowers costs. Since implementation, the project has eliminated over 4,000 tons of CO2, extended refractory life by 5pct, and cut gunning material use by 10pct.
PEP, a coalition of business and education leaders, awarded Outokumpu Calvert during its annual meeting, praising the mill’s leadership in applying science-based environmental best practices.
Outokumpu is a global stainless steel company, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, with production facilities in Finland, Sweden, the UK, the US, and the Netherlands.
