Jindal Group’s Vulcan International takes strides in sustainable steel projects

Vulcan International Holding Company, a wholly owned entity of India’s Jindal Group, is spearheading a series of steel projects in Oman, with a notable focus on a groundbreaking green steel complex in Duqm. The holding company’s portfolio encompasses key investments such as Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel, Sohar Steel, Vulcan Pelletizing Plant in Sohar, and Vulcan Green Steel in Duqm.

Jindal Group is also actively engaging in other ventures within Oman’s steel industry through a robust backward integration strategy. Notably, the company is developing a 6 mln tons per annum pelletizing project for the Vulcan Pelletizing Plant in Sohar. The construction of the plant, equipped with Metso Outotec technology, is underway, with production slated to commence by the end of 2024.

Additionally, Jindal Group’s value chain integration includes a submerged arc furnace plant that produces 48,000 tons of ferro alloys, further bolstering JSIS operations.

Environmental sustainability remains a top priority for Jindal Group. To this end, the company is investing in a pilot Carbon Capture Plant at the JSIS facility in Sohar, set to be completed by the end of 2023. This initiative will significantly contribute to decarbonization efforts and exemplify the group’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions. JSIS is also exploring partnerships to invest in renewable energy capacity, further aligning with its decarbonization objectives.

With a commitment of USD 3 bln, the group is actively developing Vulcan Green Steel, a major green steel project in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). Focused on a 5 mln tons per annum green hydrogen-ready steel plant, the project will be powered entirely by renewables and green hydrogen, establishing it as one of the world’s largest green steel facilities.

Furthermore, Jindal Group recently acquired the Sohar Steel plant, a prominent producer of high-strength steel reinforcement bars. Located near Sohar Port, the plant features advanced facilities, including a Bendotti walking beam reheating furnace and automatic tension control. With an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons, it produces a range of high-quality steel products, including rebars from 8 mm to 32 mm. The reopening of the plant has safeguarded the jobs of 200 local Omanis, after being shut down for the past three years.
