Rizhao Steel advances toward full automation in steelmaking operations

Primetals Technologies has commissioned advanced process automation and digital control systems at Rizhao Steel’s integrated plant in Rizhao, China, achieving 95pct automation of steelmaking operations. The project enables “one-button steelmaking”, marking a major milestone in smart steel production.

The upgrade includes Level 2 automation systems, BOF Optimizer, LF Optimizer, and RH Optimizer, across three LD converters, four twin ladle furnaces, and two twin RH plants. The converters are also equipped with LOMAS offgas analysis systems for dynamic end-of-blow control and improved carbon accuracy.

By integrating metallurgical models, real-time data, and intelligent process control, the system automates key production steps such as oxygen flow, material additions, slag modification, and alloy treatments. Operators now receive dynamic, real-time recommendations across all stages of steelmaking, minimizing manual intervention while improving quality, consistency, and energy efficiency.

Rizhao Steel, part of Rizhao Steel Holding Group, produces 12 mln tons of crude steel annually. Its portfolio includes HRC, wire rod, bars, and I-beams.
