Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has awarded Metso a contract to supply the third iron ore sintering plant at its IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in Asansol, West Bengal.
Metso’s scope includes engineering, equipment supply, and supervision of installation and commissioning. The new sintering plant will have a capacity of 2.67 mln tons per annum, forming part of SAIL ISP’s broader 4 mln tons per annum crude steel expansion project.
The facility will feature Metso’s Emission Optimized Sintering (EOS) technology, designed to reduce solid fuel consumption and cut CO2 emissions by over 54,000 tons annually, supporting SAIL’s sustainability goals.
Scheduled to be operational in 2029, the plant will enhance India’s move toward more efficient and sustainable steel production.
SAIL currently produces around 20.63 mln tons of crude steel per year and plans to expand capacity to 35 mln tons per annum by FY 2031.
